Specials Expenses

I have been a Special for nearly 20 years and Im keen to know what other forces do for thier Special Constables. Im involved in our force focus group and whenever the mention of money or expenses is mentioned its doesnt go down too well. I know some forces pay a meal allowance if you can produce a reciept from when on duty and some forces pay an attendance allowance as well as travel expenses.

Please can you let me know what your force do then at the next focus group I can bring the subject up and hopefully add weight to the debate.

Concealed carry and firearms in the UK

As a UK citizen that has visited the US on many occasions (I actually have friends in Michigan) I am familiar with concealed carry and support it fully. I'm no expert but I know how to shoot handguns of all calibres and I like to think I'm a pretty good shot as I've had a lot of practice over there. I fully believe that subject to the appropriate checks and training we could successfully introduce such a law over here.

I don't believe there would be a risk to the police or public as law-abiding people generally don't around killing each other over minor disputes or road rage. Concerns that this would happen in America have proven to be completely unfounded.

The rules would still apply to the Dale Cregan types that infest our cities and make life miserable for others. We maybe less likely to need a gun that police officers, but I believe such an option should still be available to any law-abiding person should they wish to do so.

Not only does concealed carry work but it works very well, with almost every that's passed such a law seeing a drop in violent crime. We have a violent crime rate that is much, much higher than the USA, although the murder rate is higher largely due to the gang violence problems in many large cities (Detroit, Los Angeles and Chicago being just a few examples).

I don't particularly like the recoil of large calibres, so I'd go with a 9mm glock (probably a model 26) since it's small and easier to conceal than many other firearms.

What do all police vans have in common?

The people driving them don't wear seatbelts! Not round this neck of the woods, anyway (including civvies in forensic vans and PCSO vans as well, not limited to any particular unit).

I know there's an exemption in the law but I just find it a bit odd that cops round here don't belt up, especially when driving a vehicle that might be responding to incidents at speed etc.

It also seems at odds with the messages that you sometimes hear from emergency responders along the lines of "if you'd seen what I'd seen, you'd belt up". Also seems odd that officers (here anyway) have no choice but to wear hi vis jackets and stab vests, yet don't need to belt up.

Is there a reason for it or is it just force of habit? I live right opposite a police station quite a lot, and having noticed when pulled up next to a police van one day I can't stop myself from seeing it now. Genuinely interested and figured this would be the best place to ask - sorry if I'm clogging up the forum with rubbish.

Cheers!

Too long on bail?

At the moment there is no limit to the time that someone can be on bail for. Setting a time limit of six months seems a sensible move to me given the impact this can have on peoples lives - Gets my vote

GPS tags for dementia patients

http://news.sky.com/story/1085308/gps-tags-for-dementia-patients-barbaric

Elderly campaigners hit out after police buy tracking devices to save time and money searching for pensioners who wander off.

Some misplaced anger directed at the police (who would have thought)

I can see the point they are making, that care needs to be better.

But thats true, no one is arguing that.

But its not better and people with dementia go missing constantly and huge police resources are put into finding them. A gps tag means we can do it immediately. For police its brilliant.

I thought this was amusing "I think they should withdraw it straight away," she said. "Trying to equate somebody who has committed a criminal act with somebody who is suffering dementia is completely wrong."

Like we could actually gps tag a criminal. That would probably never be allowed. We can tag them to a place, but not monitor their exact movements as thats probably breaching the HRA to privacy.

Motorway Speeding / Racing ?

Hi,

A few days ago I witnessed two cars speeding, possibly racing, on the motorway. I was doing 65mph and I would guess they were hitting 120mph. Maybe you guys would have a better estimation at what speed they were going at, I have the incident recorded on video.

It has been suggested that this should be reported to my local police.

I know that reporting offences like this is not as straightforward as people think.

Can the police take action based on just this video or would they need me to make a statement etc?
