Following the death of a 27 year old man in Cumbria after being tasered by police http://news.sky.com/...rticle/16051528 I started to wonder about these devices and their deployment in the UK. I find it worrying that the powers that be seem to be thinking that tasers are the way forward as staff levels fall due to budget cuts.

Tasers are portrayed as a safe device to use and are treated by the users as such. It is not a safe device though it is merely a "less lethal" alternative to a firearm. In a three month period in the USA 27 people died after one of these devices were deployed and used against them. The company that make the device, even though they say it is safe, have advised users not to aim for the chest area. Either it is safe or it is dangerous surely.

Do you have data on how many total deployments there have been in the same time and how many police related shooting deaths there are when taser was not availiable.

If you point a taser at someone who is being violent an aggressive and they continue and get tasered, who is at fault? Even if they are suffering from MH issues, it doesnt mean that they wont hurt or kill you if they are being aggressive and un co-operative.

Is there any data on the cause of death for these peope? or it it just tasered to death. It seems odd that some offices voulontere to be tasered if its so dangerous

I take it you are not equally concerned about the safety of Police Officers, who above all else have the right to go home safe and well to their families after their shift has ended. Or would you prefer one be stabbed than Taser be used because of some perceived risk to the knife wielding assailant? Because that's the bottom line. If someone is in fact Tasered, then they pose a threat to others. Not always the Police - but themselves or innocent members of the public as well. Shouldn't we be asking instead then how many lives has Taser saved? Of course that is something we would never really know for sure. And let's be honest, it doesn't have quite the same impact does it?..

Of course we do not know for a start how many of those deaths listed can be directly attributed to Taser. I'd say very few in fact. I imagine in most cases, there is a tenuous link and the actual cause of death was an unrelated, underlying issue. But I guess you will consider all the deaths in a manner, which seems to reinforce your view. That is a matter for yourself of course.

I might add though that Taser is not seen as a way forward due to budget cuts. In my force, the roll out of Taser has been curtailed greatly... due to budget cuts, funnily enough. But that aside, the general implementation of Taser started long before this government came to power and Police numbers started to decline - and for good reason. It is a less lethal form of force - and it provides Officers with greater personal protection, not against innocent non-violent people, but rather drunk or drugged violent individuals who are intent on causing the Officer or someone else serious harm. Or are you arguing Police Officers are expendable and not entitled to such protection in our ever increasingly violent society?

I'm afraid yours is the attitude, which seems to prevail in our society - that the rights of those who are dangerous and pose a threat is in fact more paramount than those basic rights of those we entrust to confront the bad guys or the innocent people, who are inevitably caught up and become victims of their appalling behaviour.

In short, if you behave, don't carry a weapon or become violent and aggressive after a few beers or a line of Coke then you're highly unlikely to find yourself on the receiving end of a Taser.

You might be surprised to learn that the Police in general receive fewer complaints from those who have been tasered than those who have been, for instance, struck with a baton. The effects of Taser are in general short lived - whereas a baton strike is likely to leave you with a decent bruise and some lasting pain and discomfort for sometime afterwards.

Off the top of my head I can think of one Police Officer, who was killed who might well still be here today had he had immediate access to a Taser. And I can think of two of my own colleagues, who likewise would not have been badly injured in the course of their duty if they had had Taser.

When all is said and done, it's a good bit of kit and all front-line Officers should be equipped with it. Conversely to your point, the uncomfortable truth is that this excellent piece of equipment is not more readily available to those of us at the sharp-end and that we are not been afforded the protection we deserve. In the many times I've seen it used now, the red laser dot landing on the offender is normally enough for them to give-in in the vast majority of cases - and no-one gets hurt in the slightest.

But I guess it's easy to adopt apparent concerns about the safety of Taser when you don't have to worry about your own safety in dealing with the dangerous and violent elements of our society. After all, if the Police can't deal with them - who you going to call?

OR shall we just club everyone with a 16 Inch piece of Machined steel. Get real about deployment in the UK..

Yes I will, having been a taser officer, say from what i have seen of US deployments in TV programs, You Tube etc, it does appear to be used to a greater extent as a Compliance type device instead of getting hands on with a subject, but hey that's probably coming from the Right to bare arms from the Constitution.

No the Powers that be are not deploying it due to falling numbers, its due to an increase in edged weapons, and as a less leathal option.

Given that the male was a Keen Gym goer, why not wait and see what the PM says as to the cause of death before we shoot down a very good piece of kit

Just out of curiousity I scrolled to the middle of the above list and googled a random death to find out the circumstances i chose this one:

Terrelle Leray Houston, 22, Hempstead, Texas

He was resisting arrest, high on PCP in a state of excited delirium and after the first shock he got back up, the second shot he got back up and then tried to remove the barbs so was shocked again. The taser was listed as a contributing factor in his death but the officer cleared of any wrongdoing. The males heart was enlarged due to drug abuse and it was stated "it was a ticking timebomb". I wonder how many of these deaths would have been avoided if the person wasn't on drugs and wasn't resisting arrest or being violent towards police.

http://www.chron.com...ide-1701952.php

A second one: Jonathan Michael Nelson, 27, Riverside County, California

His autopsy attributed his death to "acute methamphetamine toxicity" as the primary cause of death but also cites a "prolonged confrontation with law enforcement," heart disease and obesity as significant conditions. He was tasered after being violent towards officers whilst in prison.

Your list is impactive as it is very long, but I picked 2 random examples and found they aren't as simple as this person died due to taser, there are other factors involved. I would bet that most of them are the same.

Tasers have been deployed about 2 million times. There have been about 500 deaths that occurred within 24 hours of being Tasered. The Taser is most likely the most studied defensive weapon in existence. Most injuries from a Taser are caused by the fall and not the Taser.

The important number is how many police officers were killed by the tasered individual? To my knowledge that number is zero. To me that is a perfect safety record!

I think there are concerns about Taser and the effect it has on people with certain heart conditions for eg. Having said this it is a preferable alternative than a piece of lead. I am not sure how it stacks up against spray but I would imagine a taser allows a greater distance between the subject than spray does. Given the choice between spray, stick and taser the latter comes out quite well I think. The fact is that taser has never to my knowledge been described as a safe option but as stated in the op a less lethal one. In summary Taser may contribute to deaths in those with certain heart conditions but on the whole the alternatives are not much better and maybe worse IMO. The real issue is how it is used and not Taser per se. I know I would want one if I was on the streets. I think usage would be moderated on two levels anyway. First is the fact virtually everyone carries a mobile which can film and secondly an officer who has a record of merrily discharging a taser would probably have their bosses wanting to look into the reasons why.

Could also be mitigated by the fact that police officers are overwhealmingly law abiding and dont taser and thrash people for no reason?

I was coming more from the perspective that the tasered person, his mates and maybe the public audience may see things differently to the police during the incident. What I highlighted were 'objective' safeguards.

I suppose we could just revert back to bullets and do away with tasers altogether just because less than 1% die after being tasered?

I looked up Bobby Louis Merrill III who died on April 10, 2012 in Saginaw Michigan. Saginaw is about 100 miles north of where I am. I actually tried a case in the Saginaw County Circuit Court about 7 years ago.

The article that I read was that Tasers were used on him but that it had no effect.

If there has only been 730 deaths out of over 2,000,000 deployments, the percentage would be 0.000365. To contrast, in the U.S. about 370 persons are injured daily in bathtub accidents with a death occurring daily. In a 1986 study (Burdman) noted bathtub deaths for the years 87 through 89 were: 348 (87), 364 (88), and 345 (89). In 2011 the first post indicates that Tasers caused 63 deaths.

So the percentage of bathtub versus Taser deaths amount to under one-one thousandths of one percent. By way of additional contrast, in 2011 more than 500 people died in the U.S. as a result of injury due to a tornado.

Lesson learned: tornado's are more dangerous than Tasers and bathtubs.

Bullets are cheaper and you could cure the problem of criminal recidivism. But then, there would be less need for police and the economy would be adversely affected.

You also can't compare US tasers with the use of them in the UK, as US ones are a lot more powerful.

As to being issued them, if I had one at the time someone assaulted me back in February, then I wouldn't still be on restricted duties due to being badly assaulted with no end in sight, and the prospect of being sacked for doing my job, if the Winsor proposals are taken up.

I don't believe that's the case. We use the M26/X26 and so does the USA as far as I'm aware? Both deliver 50,000v obviously.

US ones can be 100,000 volts or more, depending on the State they're used in, over her Human Rights would have a field day.

Got myself confused between stun guns and tasers, seen a stun gun over there advertised with 4 million volts!

Volts represents pressure. The 50,000 number represents the max voltage available to close the circuit. If you deploy a taser the max pressure would be well under 1,500 volts. I think the average voltage would be closer to 400 volts. Remember current Tasers uses pulsed energy. A static electrical shock could have as much as 30,000 volts. Far, far less than a Taser. Yet, I don't see any public outcry to ban wool carpets.
