Is it an offence to have an asp (expandable baton) in my own private home. I understand it is an offense to have one anywhere in public but what about in my home?????

No offences being committed simply by keeping a baton at home. However telescopic batons are a prohibited item meaning that you cannot make, sell, loan, gift them etc. So if you bought one then the baton is evidence of a crime, and could be seized as evidence. The exception to this (as with stuff like automatic knives etc) is if you already had the item before the legislation came into effect.
