A pervert who groped a teenager and fitted tiny cameras in two bathrooms so he could spy on women and a girl has been warned that he will be jailed for his crimes.Mark Klein, 46, of Charles Street, off Fusehill Street, Carlisle, had denied causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, perverting the course of justice and three counts of voyeurism, using the cameras to secretly watch women and a girl as they undressed.
He was convicted of all the charges after a trial.
As she remanded him in custody, Carlisle Crown Court judge Barbara Forrester told Klein: “The only outcome of this sentencing procedure will be immediate custody.”
She added that background reports on Klein would help her to decide how long the sentence – to be passed on January 18 – will be.
Klein shook his head as the verdict was announced.
Earlier, the jury had heard how he gave a 15-year-old victim a lift to an abandoned quarry.
They had arrived there at about midnight.
The teenager, giving evidence by video link, sobbed as she told the court what happened that night. She said: “I was scared because it was dark and I knew it was a place we were not supposed to be.”
She said Klein ran off when she thought that somebody was coming.
Later, he had contacted her with a text message and again on the social networking site Facebook, making sexual suggestions.
She said Klein communicated online with her using a fake name and he asked her to ensure that her online chat history was turned off so there would be no record of it.
Klein told the jury that at the quarry he and the girl had no personal conversation and he suggested the teenager’s father had tried to pick a fight with him. “We’d done nothing wrong,” he said.
Challenged about the cameras, Klein said he installed one to check on whether the girl living there was smoking in the bathroom.
After Klein was remanded in custody, Detective Sergeant Michael Taylor and Detective Constable James Yallop spoke of the damage of his offences, saying that they had impacted on a “significant number of people.”
DS Taylor said: “His use of the cameras in the bathrooms was a violation of people’s privacy in their own home, done entirely for his own sexual gratification. It didn’t happen just by chance.”
