Sorry if i'm stepping on dear old Kenworthy's toes here, but saw this and thought it needed posting. An officer has gone missing during the rescue operation in the aftermath of heavy rainfall and serious flooding in Cumbria.

Heart goes out to the family on this one.

This one hits home as it's where I live and I used to work at Workington police station so I still know a few lads from there. Thinking of you guys and hope your colleague is found soon.

I crawled through Cumbria yesterday on the train down from Scotland and the flooding even early on in the day was horrendous, the tracks were getting covered and there were literally waves crashing against walls in fields because the combination of water levels and wind were so high. I can imagine just how bad it could have got, my thoughts go out to all those emergency personnel dealing with the floods and in particular those associated with this officer.

Apparently they have now had to call off the lifeboat which was searching.

Horrible, horrible situation.

And the sad news.
Body found in search for missing Pc
A body has been found in the search for a hero police constable swept away when a bridge collapsed during the floods.

Cumbria Assistant Chief Constable Jerry Graham announced that an unidentified body was found on a beach.

Missing Pc Bill Barker, 45, had been directing motorists away from Northside bridge in Workington, Cumbria, when he disappeared into the swollen waters of the River Derwent.

Mr Graham said Pc Barker was "saving lives when the tragic incident occurred".

A major search for Pc Barker was hampered by "horrendous" weather conditions which forced hundreds of people to flee their homes.

Mr Graham said: "I'm very sad to have to report we've recovered a body on the beach of an individual. That has not been identified. Our thoughts go out to Pc Barker and his family.

"Pc Barker had been serving in Cumbria Police for 25 years. I've heard nothing but good reports about him today. He was a family man with four children."

Mr Graham said Pc Barker and a colleague went on the bridge on foot in an attempt to help drivers trying to get across it.

He said: "Unfortunately when they were on the bridge, the bridge gave way just due to the volume of water and Pc Barker went into the water and was swept away."

A tragic loss.

Whilst it is little consolation, I do hope that the powers that be see fit to award this brave officer a posthumous QGM or QPM

RIP

The missing officer was a roads policing unit officer with 20+ years service.

Thoughts to his family and especially his colleagues, who had to continue their work knowing he was missing.
Cumbria is a small force, and many will have known him personally.

There have been problems with people travelling to look at the floods, then getting into difficulty.
I hope that the warnings which have gone out will be heeded in the light of this news, which shows just how dangerous conditions are in many areas.

Local reports are that a car was on the bridge, there was a small bit of damage to the bridge (it had been officially closed since the evening before), he went to check that no-one was in it and the whole bridge gave way at once.

My sympathies to his family and collegues.
