Policeman Damaged his Socks!!

Not sure if this is the right place but I saw something which amused me. Some police forces have published lists of the gratuities given/accepted/refused by officers. This one made me laugh.

"After appearing on the television programme Police Interceptors, and damaging his socks, an officer received a gift consisting of a pair of cartoon police officer socks"

Pray tell, how do you 'damage your socks'?

No mention of damaged trousers or shoes/boots, so what was he doing to damage his socks?!!
